When I managed large IT infrastructures based on proprietary applications, the most successful software always followed these guidelines. This philosophy -- embraced by the open source community and so vital to its success -- demonstrated to me first hand how great software should be developed.
Addressing real-world challenges. The values that define the open source community mean very little without knowledge and expertise.
